The São Jorge Castle, dating back to the X. – XI. century, was conquered from the Moors in 1147 by Afonso Henriques. Its’ the most visited monument of the city.
Alfama
With its enchanting streets and alleys, Alfama is one of the most genuine districts of the city. Cradle of Fado, classified as World Heritage, in Alfama you will be able to enjoy the best views over Lisbon every time you stop at one of its belvederes.
S. Vicente de Fora Monastery
The church of São Vicente de Fora originates from a monastery raised by D. Afonso Henrique in 1147 in veneration of São Vicente, patron of Lisbon. The expression „de fora“ („from outside“) comes from the location outside the city wall, which protected the city at the time. In the inside, azulejo tiles, rich examples of sacral art, the cloisters and the decorative glory of the sacristy is enjoyed. Also, the royal pantheon, where the members of the dynasty of Bragança rest, may be visited. The way up to the terrace of the monastery can’t be missed: the panoramic view over the city and River Tejo is beyond comparison.
Largo do Carmo
Symbol of the revolution of 1974, at this square the New State (Estado Novo) conceded victory to the soldiers of the Armed Forces Movement (MFA). The ruins of the Convent of Carmo and the fountain of Carmo are still visible nowadays.
Baixa and Chiado
Traditional zone of street trade, very cosmopolitan and animated.
