Experience a journey through Portugal’s spiritual and historical heartlands, beginning at the Sanctuary of Fátima, a revered pilgrimage site where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Visit the Basilica, the Chapel of the Apparitions, and the humble houses of the shepherds in nearby Aljustrel, where their stories began. Not far from Fátima stands the awe-inspiring Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, built in honor of Portugal’s victory in the decisive 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota.
Continue to the coast to explore the traditional fishing village of Nazaré, now a global hotspot for big-wave surfing, made famous when Garrett McNamara rode one of the world’s largest waves. End the day in the enchanting medieval town of Óbidos, captured from the Moors in 1148 by King Afonso Henriques. Surrounded by ancient walls, Óbidos is known for its charming streets, summer Medieval Festival, and its famous cherry liqueur ginjinha, traditionally served in edible chocolate cups.
