Tour Highlights

A tour through the Portuguese capital is a journey back in time: we can start in the Middle Age, by observing the sites of the Portuguese discoveries where many Jewish astronomers and businessmen participated, to cross the time of the inquisition and to visit the downtown area where refugees of the Second World War lived in security which lacked in the rest of Europe. In the Middle Age, the Jews played a prominent role in the administration of the kingdom, in urban development and in the commercial field. Lisbon had four Jewry and many Jewish families lived outside the areas attributed to them. This is a sign of the large population size of the jewish community in the 15th century. The current Synagogue, Shaaré Tikvá, was inaugurated in 1904 and can be visited on Rua Alexandre Herculano. The Synagogue as no facade to the main street since this visibility was still reserved for Catholic temples.
